A trip to Cambridge

This year, I had an unforgettable experience in the summer holiday. I got an opportunity to visit Cambridge! Honestly, those three weeks were the happiest time of my life. Before this trip, my feeling was a bit complicated. On the one hand, I felt extremely excited since it was my first time to go to England. On the other hand, I was nervous about the life in Cambridge. Would the people there dislike me? Could I make any friends there? Those worries almost pushed me off the edge.

When I landed at the airport with Kelly, Stella and three students from Tin Shui Wai Government Secondary School, there was a taxi driver waiting for us and took us to our homestay in Cambridge. My host family was Indian. My host mum, Nabali, looked very kind. When I arrived, she introduced herself to me and then helped me take my suitcase upstairs. She showed me my room and told me to take a rest. When I was sitting on the bed, I was a bit anxious regarding my host. I kept thinking about one question, ‘Will I eat Indian curry every day?’ Luckily, I didn't. Nabali cooked different kinds of foods for me, of course it includes Indian curry. I had a German roommate, Janis. He was kind and friendly. When I first saw him, I felt happy to have such a nice roommate.

On the next day, we began our school day. My school was called Select English. We had a placement test on the first day. After dividing the classes, we started our lessons. Britain has a very liberal education system. It focuses on group discussion and it aims to let students explore the world. Compared with Hong Kong education, the education system here wouldn't make students feel stressed. At the beginning, I felt scared since my classmates were foreigners. Communication was not a big problem, but I was afraid that I could not make friends with them. Luckily, they were very nice and they always chatted with me. We usually taught each other our own languages. One thing that I felt a bit embarrassed about was that one of my classmates, Sofia always hugged me. I was just like a teddy bear. She always asked me to take photos with her too. I think I am too handsome.

Gradually, I became used to the life in Cambridge. The most unforgettable and saddest thing was the farewell party. It was a bit weird since we would continue to stay there after the farewell party but for the others, it was their last day. In the party, we took a lot of photos and hugged our friends many many times. I was a bit touched since I might not see my friends again once they left. We also exchanged phone numbers so that we could chat in our free time. Besides, the disco is one of the most unforgettable experiences. It was noisy and crowded inside. We were just like sardines in a can. Nevertheless, we had great fun there. We danced all night and I almost couldn't get up the next day. Besides the disco and farewell party, there were also many special activities, such as punting on the River Cam, visiting the botanic garden and sumo wrestling - we had to wear the sumo costume to make us look like sumo wrestlers. I felt strange with the costume on and couldn’t even stand properly!

Through this trip, I not only experienced the British education system, but I also widened my horizons and learnt different cultures of different nations. Lastly, thank you Wan Chai Rotary Club for giving me the chance to see the world!
